Based out of a central hub at Leeds Bradford Airport, Jet2 (marketed as Jet2.com) is an industry leader in low-cost air travel.
One of the few budget carriers who also offer freight and cargo services alongside their main operations (possessing an exclusive contract with Royal Mail). The company have a number of smaller offices based around Europe, including spots in Manchester, Belfast and Alicante.
Parent company The Dart Group is also responsible for Jet2holidays – a low-cost holidays provider, combining selected hotel accommodation with transfers using Jet2 flights.
Although widely perceived to be one of the main players in the market (with a fleet of 51 private aircraft that fly between 65 global destinations), Jet2 have struggled to keep up with both Ryanair and Easyjet – who lead the industry in terms of annual passengers and revenue returns. However, having only run their first flights in the spring of 2003, they are still believed to be one of the fastest growing companies in the air travel business.
The growth of Jet2 and the wider budget travel industry around it has seen premium brands such as British Airways and Emirates have their financial dominance of the market challenged in recent years, with a number of companies starting their own budget brands to try and compete – with Flybe and BMI Baby perhaps the two most notable.
Like their rivals, Jet2 have come under heavy criticism from industry watchdogs for the misleading nature of many of the prices they advertise – with additional taxes and charges often being added on top of fares promoted. These additional costs have not stopped Jet2’s meteoric rise, with an estimated 5 million customers using their service each year.
